“Walkability”

In a car dominated city like Houston, pedestrians are continually at risk of being hit by an errant driver. Houston ranks 25 of 39 U.S. cities, fair but still scary, for both bicyclists and pedestrians (Center for Real Estate Analysis, George Washington University, 2014). Our Metro area has some 12 walkable urban places, or WALKUPS, throughout the Metro Area. This puts Houston about the same as the much smaller city of Pittsburg (population 39%X Houston). Almost all of the WALKUPS are in the central city, except for “town centers” in the Woodlands, Sugar Land, Pearland and Conroe. According to the study, Houston has a “moderate potential” for future walkable urbanism.
